Fidesz to seek dissolution of parliament, early elections

Hungary’s main opposition Fidesz party and Christian Democrat ally is putting forward a motion to dissolve parliament, Fidesz parliamentary group leader Tibor Navracsics said on Tuesday.

Responding to Navracsics’s announcement, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany dismissed the initiative saying that “we have more important things to do at a time of a global crisis: we must save jobs and help those in a difficult situation.”

Fidesz should reveal its detailed plans to resolve the crisis, Ibolya David, head of the small opposition Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF) told MTI. She added that if Fidesz’s programme was “creditable and good for the country”, her party would support the motion to dissolve parliament.

Fidesz’s goal is to dissolve the national assembly on March 8 and it wants the relevant motion to be discussed at parliament’s session on Thursday, Navracsics said.

He added that the next general election should be brought forward to coincide with the European Parliamentary elections in June.

Fidesz and the Christian Democrats do not have enough support from their own benches to carry the motion, and would need votes from members of the liberal Alliance of Free Democrats and the conservative MDF to do so.
