Hungary’s liberal opposition Free Democrats will not support main opposition Fidesz’s motion for early elections, party leader Gabor Fodor said on Wednesday.
Fodor said the motion does not help the country’s most important priority: finding ways to ease the impact of the economic crisis. He said that under these circumstances it was important for parties to work together, rather than to build further division.
Fidesz and its Christian Democrat ally said on Tuesday they would put forward a motion to dissolve parliament at its Thursday’s extraordinary session.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany has dismissed the motion as unimportant.
The small opposition Democratic Forum (MDF) said they needed to see more details before they could decide whether the motion was good for the country. However, MDF would approve of the issue being included on the agenda of tomorrow’s parliamentary session, the party’s parliamentary group leader Karoly Herenyi said.
We agree that the current government is not capable of handling the crisis, but this does not automatically mean that the next government will be, Herenyi said.
