Hungary’s political parties understand the need to join the forces but they cannot do so while Ferenc Gyurcsany remains prime minister, Tibor Navracsis, group leader of the main opposition party Fidesz, said during an extraordinary parliamentary session convened to debate the economic crisis.
Responding to Gyurcsany’s speech outlining tax cuts, Navracsics suggested Gyurcsany should accept an early election.
“Hungary needs a new beginning. The truth is that we are aware of the need to join forces, but unfortunately we have to choose between joining forces with you or the voters; prime minister, I say that we should choose the voters,” he said.
Navracsics said Gyurcsany feared an early election but he should “look the voters in the eye and take responsibility for the past 4-5 years”.
Fidesz on Wednesday put forward a motion to dissolve parliament with the aim of forcing a general election to coincide with the European Parliamentary elections in June. The motion today was dismissed by members of parliament.
