The minority governing Socialist Party’s planned congress in March is expected to discuss ways to win back the trust of voters that the party has lost, the party deputy leader Imre Szekeres said on Saturday.
The congress must provide the political conditions to win back voters’ trust, said Szekeres. Once the party wins back its credibility, party members and local party organisations will once again feel that they are members of a strong and successful political party that promotes left-wing values, he added.
If more than two parties get into parliament at the next parliamentary elections, including the Free Democrats and the Hungarian Democratic Forum (MDF), then chances will be good that a government coalition can be formed by the Socialists with these two parties, Szekeres said.
The latest poll published by Szonda Ipsos institute on Wednesday showed that the Socialists were supported by 17 percent of voters, while the opposition Fidesz party by 32 percent.
