President says Hungarian-Romanian ties good despite split on minority rights

Relations between Hungary and Romania are strong, Hungary’s President Laszlo Solyom said after meeting his Romanian counterpart Traian Basescu on Monday.

Solyom said they had discussed minority issues, energy co-operation and environmental matters.

The ethnic Hungarian RMDSZ party is unlikely to form a part of the new Romanian government, but this will not curtail minority rights for ethnic Hungarians, Basescu told Solyom. These are guaranteed, said Basescu, adding that Romania’s minority policies are in line with EU norms.

Speaking to MTI after the meeting, Basescu ruled out territorial autonomy for Hungarians.

“There will never be territorial autonomy in Sekler land; Romania is a unified nation-state,” Basescu said.

Solyom said Hungary regards autonomy for Hungarians as a possibility.

Hungarians are Romania’s largest minority, their number approaching 1.5 million.

“A unified nation state”, How long have the Szeklers and Magyars lived in Erdely? How long have the Vlachs been invited in as quests. A lesson to be learned for all nations and people…be careful who you invite into your home, they might displace you eventually.

800-1000 years, romanians have been there for 2000+ years (see burebista/decebal, roman ocupation)
Magyars have been the guests from my point of view

Claiming that modern day Romanians are descendants of Dacians is just as ludicrous as claiming that modern day Americans are descendants of Native American Indians, or Hungarians from the original Magyar tribes for that matter.
Take your outdated 80′s Ceausescu propaganda elsewhere, because no real historian gives any merit to those ridiculous theories.

  4. Adrian says:

descendants of Romans + Dacians + slavs
    what are Hungarians descendants of?
Also, how come there are only about 20% magyars in transylvania?

    Adrianescu,
Prehistoric humans were living in present day Romania more than 40,000 years ago. Unfortunately it’s been all downhill since.
