Budapest, Washington begin exploratory talks on Guantanamo detainees

Hungary is in talks with the US on the possibility of accepting former detainees from the Guantanamo Bay detention centre, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lajos Szelestey said Tuesday. In principle, Hungary could receive former prisoners, but no specifics have been agreed on, he said.

Roving US ambassador John Clint Williamson conferred with ministry undersecretary László Várkonyi in Budapest on Friday about the possible acceptance of prisoners.

Williamson was received on his exploratory visit by Foreign Minister Kinga Göncz. The cabinet will decide whether to accept detainees after consultations with the parliamentary parties and the secret services.

An MP speaking on condition of anonymity told Magyar Hírlap that the parliamentary parties would not support the acceptance of Guantanamo prisoners.

Zsolt Németh, Fidesz chairman of Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, said Hungary cannot take an official stance on the question until the EU does. As for Fidesz’s view, he said no decision will be made until a formal request is filed by the US.

There’s a strong “not in my backyard” opposition among US lawmakers. They don’t want to “become a target” so they want none of the Guantanamo prisoners. They prefer to dump their mess in countries they could not even locate on the map, like Hungary.
