The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) will allocate Ft 3 billion, unprecedented in the world of NGOs, toward the establishment of the Tom Lantos International Freedom and Democracy Institute, in honour of the late Hungarian-born US congressman.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány announced at a memorial conference in Budapest last September that the Hungarian state wishes to pay tribute to Lantos's intellectual heritage by establishing a scholarly institute bearing his name. Parliament has yet to vote on the related bill.
It is expected that the institute will employ research fellows, organise conferences, and produce publications to further the legacy of Lantos, a campaigner for human rights. The institute will also award a Lantos Human Rights Prize.
The grant for the foundation of the Budapest institute will be allocated through the Tom Lantos Foundation established in New Hampshire last year after the politician's death.
I cannot believe that the Hungarian government is donating this much money on the Lantos foundation at a time when it is going through the crisis it is now going through.
Would much prefer seeing this money spent on dealing with actual Hungarian problems - like the homeless, education, fight against corruption, etc.
I am a proud second generation Hungarian American and DO NOT feel that Lantos represents us in any manner. I am totally against this.
"the legacy of Lantos" in human rights.
Interesting. This is the same Lantos who demanded the names of Hungarian Guard members to put them on the terrorist list. So much for the human rights of the opposition.
Yes thats the same guy, unfortunately still having influence generating from a lower realm.
I didn't know Lantos wanted to put members of the Magyar Gárda on a terrorist list.
What a great idea! The Magyar Gárda brings shame to Hungary and any move to rid them of the country is a good start.
Joe,
What do you think of the human race?
I would like to hear an outsider's opinion.
I'd watch what you say, HP. I hear the vast conspiracy is watching you. You wouldn't want to reveal too much "truth" on these boards.
Oh, and you're right, about the worst thing that could happen here would be more funding to dig up relevant information on human rights. Instead let's empower the Garda. I'll bet they'd safeguard everyone's rights.
Hi Trinity thats a great suggestion? Donate to the Garda! At least the safety of Hungarians would be reassured.
Hotpaprika is a Hungarian idiot who doesn't even live in Hungary. If he did, he could get dressed up in the Gárda uniform and march around with other latent homosexuals who just adore men in uniforms.
Come on, Hotpaprika, come home to Hungary!
Joe, your pathetic!
Of course I'm pathetic. And I'm gay. But you are a Hungarian idiot.
I win!
"Donate to the Garda! At least the safety of Hungarians would be reassured."
Of course they are the ones who ultimately decide who is truly "Hungarian" and I am sure the definition would change often. If only they had a leader who had a 160 IQ to lead them.
But they are being led...
Excuse me for a minute... NGO isn't a short for
Non Govermental Organization...? They been found
and financed by the Governement... They will be
worse than Soros Found. and CEU together!D)
@Joe
Your definition of human beings as left bending
liberals (only) and the criminalization and de-
humanization of any opposing opinion not makes you
any better than those folks who tortured and
killed millions of people under the Nazism and
Communism!
There is no better place to put money right now in this serious recession? Money down the toilet.
The Tom Lantos Institute? Tom Lantos? (Clutching at straws). Another pisspizzled scheme "Franky"
has masterminded as well as spending money where it is not needed.
As a suggestion, and not wishing to jump of Frank's bandwagon, what about the 'Practical Pen Institute' in honour of its erstwhile inventor,
Erno Biro? The Biro (ballpoint pen) was a godsend for me at school. It replaced the fountain pen which persistently discharged its inky matter on my otherwise spotless white shirt.
I am willing to donate a week's wages toward this enterprise to get the ball (point) rolling.
Got to go. Tablet time...
Send the Garda to Afghanistan to fight `infidels`, but let American Hungarians spend money on some Tom Lantos Institute not Hungarian tax payers. They should start a Rubiks Institute, in honour of the millions of brains this toy was able to screw. Funny about Biro, everyone in the UK uses the word meaning a biro pen, yet in Hungary they didn`t name anything after him. Sorry Dangerman you had a problem with unwanted discharge, but biros also leave a bloody ink stain if the top comes off, but I grew up having to use a fountain pen in school as biros were not allowed. The most successful Hungarians only made it for one reason...They left the country...Just see the lists..at Forbes for Hungarian born rich people, the Nobel Prize winners and then the list of people who invented or discovered something.
Sadly it`s in the Hungarian psyche to be pessimistic and think of themselves and the nation as loosers.
Another reason you can see so many loosers blogging at Politics.hu
Even the thiefs, crooks and liars didn`t make it into the Forbes list of richest 1,000 people on the planet, well there was one person who is resident in Hungary but he`s a Russian.
Just take a trip to any of the big markets, it`s all Chinese, Vietnamese, Russians, Ukranians and less than 10% of the stall holders are Hungarian.
Hungarians are great academics, thinkers and inventors, but great at doing things, NO.
The Polish YES, there were a million of them in the UK working cos their own economy was naff.
The picture of the Hungarian prime suspect I mean Prime Sinister is in the New York Times. Nothing to be proud of, he's there to illustrate the meaning of the word "böszme", cleverly translated as "boneheaded". Our fine government was singled out as the best example for the worst. According to the NYT government insanity can lead to bankrupcy of such magnitude as in Hungary. The USA is advised not to follow the boneheaded borrowing habits of the boneheaded Hungarian government.
