The support of Serbia’s effort to join the European Union is an outstanding task for Hungary, a senior opposition politician said on Thursday.
Zsolt Nemeth, of the main opposition Fidesz party, head of parliament’s foreign affairs committee, spoke to MTI in Belgrade, after concluding his two-day visit to Serbia.
Serbia may receive a member candidate status and has the potential to start accession negotiations within a year-and-a-half starting on January 1, 2010, when Hungary will be among the three countries assuming the EU presidency, Nemeth said.
In his opinion Serbia fulfils the main condition of EU accession, which is cooperation with The Hague International Court of Justice. It is also very important, Nemeth said, that Serbia support the EULEX, EU’s rule and law mission in Kosovo.
Nemeth expressed his hope that Serbia will be included to the “Schengen white list”. He said there was a realistic chance that visa requirement to the EU members would be abolished for Serb citizens already this year, which at present causes grave difficulties for individuals, businesses and cultural entities alike on the two sides of the Hungarian-Serbian border.
Regarding a statute that would extend the autonomy of Vojvodina, Serbia’s northern province with a sizeable ethnic Hungarian minority, Nemeth said his ethnic Hungarian partners had told him the Serbian government was committed to the statute.

More partisan Hungarian politicians playing with the Vojvodina autonomy issue again. They should be careful how history will judge them. If the people of Vojvodina want autonomy and the Serbs are happy for the autonomy to exist, fine. But if too many Hungarian politicians try to stir things up, it’ll look very bad geo-politically if increasing autonomy causes social unrest in Serbia and Vojvodina. Let the Serbs and Vojvodinans sort it out between themselves, don’t interfere. Just encourage and support both parties in this, no matter what path they take in negotiations.
