Hungary will send a 40-member rifle platoon to Afghanistan to secure the August presidential elections there, Defence Minister Imre Szekeres said on Thursday.
Szekeres spoke to MTI in Krakow, Poland, where he participated at a two-day conference of NATO defence ministers.
There are currently 300 staff members of the Hungarian armed forces stationed in Afghanistan in the NATO-led forces.
The Hungarian provincial reconstruction team has built roads, small water work facilities, schools and medical centres as well as financing medical developments, police training and veterinary health projects in the northern Baghlan province.
Szekeres also said he held a tete-a-tete negotiations with his US counterpart, Robert Gates, and they decided that he will visit the US in March.

Politics aside, HU should take a page from Poland or Romania and take this opportunity to send a brigade, at the very least, to these NATO hotspots so that they can acquire invaluable combat experience under the NATO umbrella.
“Combat experience”? What for? Hungary doesn’t even have an army to speak of. Getting blown up and being shot by snipers will not do much good, it’s a waste of men and money.
I just had an epiphany! For all those lads in Jobbik, Magyar Garda and holligans anonymous who
turn up for the buzz of fighting at football matches, demonstrating/throwing molotov cocktails at demonstrations> These upstanding citizens can get their wish for wearing a uniform,get in some training and see what real aggression and hatred is like. Send them off to Afghanistan to fight the `Infidels`…Let them stay until they can only come home when they renounce violence and hatred.
Just like your free-willing who fought against the fascists in the Spanish Civil War.
But here`s the thing, we send off any Hungarian Roma who commit and are found guilty of violence.
So your Magyar rigade would be a mixed bunch, platoons proportional to their crime rates in Hungary, so maybe 50% Hungarian Roma and 50% Hungarian non Roma.
But any Hungarian citizen could earn the `right to enroll.
Of course before joining back into mainstream
society, they are screened for psychological
evaluation by top notch behaviorists.
