Hungary’s government should resist advertising its overarching policies for the long term and get on with putting out the fires of the present crisis, because election will be held in a year’s time, Gabor Fodor, leader of the opposition liberal party, said at a conference on Thursday.
Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany’s package on addressing the economic crisis was too little too late, the Free Democrat head told journalists during the break of the liberal economic conference.
He said revenues should not be stimulated through tax rises. The government should instead make cutbacks on the spending side, which is a tougher proposition, but one which most economists are in agreement with, he added.
“It shouldn’t flirt with reforms but take brave and determined action,” Fodor said.
Fodor said he would support steps which went in the right direction, such as raising the threshold of the main tax band and dispensing with boons and loopholes in the tax system.
Gabor Fodor is absolutely correct when he says Gyurcsany should cut back on spending instead of increasing tax. Fodor also brings up the old chestnut:reform. Yes! Everybody knows (including miniszterelenök)that widespread reform is needed. It won’t happen in this parliament. When Hungarians next go to the polling station they better make sure that firstly, they are not going to get a lying, demented, halfwit as leader. Secondly, they are voting for a party that will institute the reforms Hungary badly needs.
