A man threw an egg at Budapest mayor Gábor Demszky in the function hall of the Culture Institute of the Republic of Hungary in Bratislava on Friday.
The egg thrower called Demszky a traitor for accepting the invitation to Bratislava and the “anti-Hungarian” policy of the Free Democrats.
Demszky, who was presenting his book entitled Keleti éden (Eastern Eden), was not hit. Organisers led the man out of the room so the presentation could continue.
Institute director Péter Krasztev told parameter.sk website that the incident reflects the regrettable Hungarian political conditions rather than the institute’s values.
Egg throwing is not punishable by law in Slovakia, unlike in Hungary where egg throwers can now be imprisoned for up to two years.
Throwing an egg lands you in jail for two years now?? Holy jeez. So a rotten egg gets you five, I assume?
So if someone threw an egg at you and accidentally blinded you you’d be able to laugh it off?
Joe,
There are already laws against causing bodily harm, so that’s covered. Egg-throwing is just a form of political protest, the new law is not about protecting the public, it’s more like a preparation for the civil unrest, coming soon to your neighborhood. More and more people lose their jobs, their ability to pay mortgages, etc. Soon the only thing they can afford will be eggs. Let’s lock up these terrorists, right?
When laws are idiotic, it’s our civic duty to ignore them.
Joe: You are really worried about an egg blinding someone? How about police aiming rubber bullets at the heads of people taking part in lawful demonstrations, and taking out an eye?
Demszky is lucky he gets eggs. It could be worse.
Tunde, when was the last time police fired rubber bullets at a peaceful demonstration?
