Gyurcsány says crisis endangering basic democratic values

Hungary’s Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany on Sunday said it was outstandingly important to join forces in the country, as the basic values of the democratic political transition got endangered in the past months.

The prime minister spoke to selected intellectuals at a meeting in Budapest held behind closed doors, and his speech was published on his internet site.

The threats to the basic values of the democratic political transition are accelerated by the global economic crisis, he said.

Gyurcsany voiced his opinion that the third Hungarian republic is facing the gravest challenge of its past 20 years.

From the history of the 20th century we can learn that nationalist, radical, extremist movements can best strengthen when the societies face social challenges, basically due to economic problems, he said.

He requested participants at the meeting to help the country better understand the world, and help Hungary understand that nobody will solve its problems.

“Neither the EU, nor the world will solve our problems”, he said.
