Spontaneous anti-government rally draws hundreds to Parliament

A spontaneous rally at the square in front of Hungary’s Parliament ended peacefully on Monday evening after parliament had voted down motions to dissolve itself.

During the rally on Monday afternoon, hundreds of demonstrators chanted anti-government slogans calling on the government and Socialist Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany to resign.

Some of them carried banners and the red-white striped flags associated with the radical right.

Police put up crowd-control barriers around the square during the rally.

The number of demonstrators fell sharply after they learnt that motions to dissolve parliament had been voted down.
