Minister says local governments to cut red tape, number of bodies

Local government reform will mainly involve cutting red tape and reducing the number of local council representatives and administrative staff, Local Government Minister Istvan Gyenesei said on Tuesday.

Gyenesei noted that 3,194 local councils currently operate, whereas there are 1,138 associated offices and 761 public administration units. The latter should be cut by at least 25 percent, to under 1,500, he added.

The government will implement measures to make local government more efficient and democratic, while making responsibilities more clearly defined, Gyenesei said.
