Szili to run for mayor of Pécs, would leave House Speaker post if elected

Speaker of Parliament Katalin Szili was unanimously and unconditionally elected as a candidate for mayor of Pécs Tuesday by the local Socialist Party chapter.

The election for the mayor’s post, scheuled for May 10, will be held because Socialist mayor Péter Tasnádi died on January 27.

Zsolt Páva will be the Fidesz-Christian Democrat candidate and Socialist councilman István Juhász will run as an independent.

In an interview with Népszabadság on Tuesday, Szili said she will resign her post of House Speaker if elected mayor of Pécs.

She will make an official announcement today.
