In view of deteriorating security in Afghanistan, the main opposition centre-right Fidesz party would support increasing the budget of the Hungarian provincial reconstruction team (PRT) stationed in the northern Baghlan province, Zsolt Nemeth, head of Parliament’s foreign affairs committee, told MTI on Tuesday.
“The security situation is deteriorating in Afghanistan, including its northern provinces. It follows that the Hungarian mission should receive as much support as possible,” he said.
The committee’s deputy head, Vilmos Szabo of the governing Socialists, said his party also regarded it important to keep the team’s funding at least on the current level.
The two politicians emphasised that Hungary’s role in Afghanistan was a matter of consensus among the parliamentary parties.
Hungary has been operating a PRT in Baghlan since 2006. The team has constructed roads, health centres and small power plants in the province. Its three-year term is to expire in October.
Asked if Hungary planned to prolong the mandate of its PRT, Szabo said, “both the US administration and NATO are committed to continue their mission, and Hungary wishes to take part in this effort. Prolonging the PRT’s mandate would be one of the options to be considered by the government.”
