For marginal parties of the Hungarian Left, facial hair is key to electoral success. There was a time when the Free Democrats understood this, but over the years, they have adopted razors and along with their beards, shed supporters. The lesson has not been lost on everyone, as blikk.hu is reporting that former Free Democrat founder and current bearded intellectual-at-large Gáspár Miklós Tamás is leading the Green Left’s (Zöld Baloldal’s) list for the European Parliamentary elections to be held in June. Among the goals of the party are withdrawing Hungary from NATO and making Europe nuclear weapons free. Somehow, we don’t believe even Tamás’s beard is capable of that.
