Hungary’s secret services minister Gyorgy Szilvasy told commercial television ATV on Wednesday that he was expecting this year’s celebrations of the national holiday on March 15 to be peaceful.
Extremist organisations might have plans to be present but groups inclined to commit violent acts were already unsuccessful last year and this shows that they lack the support they would need to act, Szilvasy said.
“One of the reasons being is that direct political support received in previous years (…) from Fidesz seems to be rather limited towards the extremist organisations this year,” Szilvasy said.
The celebrations on March 15, 2007 were marred by anti-government riots.
Szilvasy also said that he did not believe one single organisation stood behind recent attacks against Hungary’s Roma. He said the Centre Against Organised Crime had no data indicating that organised crime in Hungary had any ethnic motivations.
