Conservative groups plan “huge” anti-government protest on April 5th

A group of conservative civil groups plan to mount a “huge” demonstration in Budapest’s Heroes’ Square on April 5, the day the minority governing Socialist party plans to officially designate a new prime minister, Nepszabadsag daily said on Tuesday.

The groups will campaign for early elections and their action also aims to put pressure on MPs ahead of a vote the following day in parliament paving the way for Gordon Bajnai to become the next head of government after Ferenc Gyurcsany steps down.

“Ahead of the vote, we want to exert pressure on parliamentary representatives, and this is why we await any citizen who would like early elections,” said Tamas Fricz, a political scientist who is one of the organisers.

On April 6, MPs will engage in a constructive vote of no confidence in Gyurcsany. By this method, Socialist and Free Democrat deputies expect to usher in Gyurcsany’s replacement in a vote on April 14.
