The leader of Hungary’s liberal Free Democrats — the opposition party which holds the key to the success of the bid by Gordon Bajnai to become the next prime minister — reaffirmed on Monday his party’s demand that non-partisan experts should control key ministries.
Addressing a session of parliament, Gabor Fodor said the Free Democrats’ decision to support Bajnai’s candidacy had been taken amid conditions which had presented them with a “difficult and serious dilemma”.
He said that the only way of moving Hungary beyond the current crisis was making sure that Bajnai headed a government of experts rather than Socialist party stalwarts.
“We can’t allow Hungary to get into a rut over the next few months,” said Fodor.
Fodor urged the main conservative opposition party Fidesz to put their support behind a technocratic government in the interest of the country.
Tibor Navaracsics, the Fidesz parliamentary leader, said on Monday that Fidesz was maintaining its demand for early elections.
“We can’t allow Hungary to get into a rut over the next few
months,” said Fodor.
Well, nice to see that Fodor’s been paying attention to what’s been
going on for the last few months. Well done Gábor, remembering to
keep in touch with the electorate! What a prime twat.
