Gordon Bajnai, the Socialist party's choice to head the next government, commands only eight percent support, according to a Nezopont Institute poll on Monday.
The survey of 500 adults was carried out before news emerged that Bajnai was a serious contender for the post of prime minister.
The pollster found that just under half of all voters backed opposition leader Viktor Orban while 6 percent said outgoing Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany should stay on.
Sixty-four percent of voters said they wanted early elections, whereas only 19 percent agreed with the planned change of Prime Minister without elections. Even among Socialist supporters, 21 percent backed an early vote.
