The national council of Hungary’s liberal Free Democrats voted support for prime minister designate Gordon Bajnai at a meeting on Sunday afternoon.
The body voted 62:21 in favour of Bajnai.
The council’s decision authorises the party’s executives to support Bajnai’s government as long as its composition reflects the Free Dems’ expectations of a technocratic, crisis management government and if its programme is based on the ideas outlined by the Reform Alliance, party chair Gabor Fodor said following the meeting.
Participants in the council session also voiced the party’s requirement that the new prime minister should exert efficient efforts to boost investors’ confidence in the Hungarian economy both at home and abroad, Fodor said. The Free Democrats are confident that those requirements will be met, he added.
Bajnai’s nomination to prime minister was approved by the minority governing Socialist Party earlier on Sunday and parliament will vote on him on April 14.
