Fidesz yesterday rejected an invitation from Prime Minister designate Gordon Bajnai to discuss the future cabinet’s plans to manage the economic crisis.
The Democratic Forum agreed to such talks, while the Christian Democrats did not. Invitations were sent to all three of the party leaders.
Party spokesman Péter Szíjjártó said in a written response that Fidesz will not hold negotiations with the “illegitimate” cabinet, nor with the Socialist and Free Democrat caucuses “behind the backs of ordinary people,” adding “You have not been elected by anybody to any post”.
Forum leader Ibolya Dávid said her party is ready for talks if the future of the country is at stake. Caucus leader Károly Herényi confirmed that the Forum will meet with Bajnai.
This is just stupid. The rules are the rules, it’s not an illegal gov’t; it’s a gov’t that had it had any integrity would have stepped down; but instead has chosen for it’s on personal reasons (and not the good of the country) to cling to office.
Having said that, without effectively talking to these guys, Fidesz is doing themselves a couple of dis-services.
In 14 months time they might actually manage to win; and then the mess will belong to Fidesz. At that time the mess will be much worse (certainly 1 year of frozen pensioners living on potato soup and strikes by all the civil servants; coupled with MNB (and not HU Inc) reserves of 12B EUR (left from propping up the HUF), and new IMF and HU bond debt service of 1B+ yearly (or read that as 5% of gov’t revenue yearly, and I’m being optimistic here) will be something that words alone won’t be able to solve; especially if those words are, it’s not my fault… wasn’t me, nosiree bub!
Sorry, Vic, but you have to grit your teeth and bring your toys and ideas to the table if you’re really a patriot; at least if you say what you think ought to be done and it doesn’t happen then at least you were trying. Instead of just allowing these guys to do whatever they want. That is unless you don’t have any ideas and are looking for a picture to fill the frame you’ve got called “Scapegoat Centrefold of the Year, 2011.”
