Hungary has called on Serbian authorities to take resolute action to prevent anti-Hungarian activities in Vojvodina, the foreign affairs spokesman said on Thursday.
On April 6, the Hungarian ambassador in Belgrade personally asked a senior official responsible for bilateral relations at the foreign ministry to make sure that the Serbian authorities take action against perpetrators of anti-Hungarian incidents and that they are called to account for their actions.
Several anti-Hungarian incidents have been reported in recent weeks, including an ethnically motivated attack against a Hungarian youth in Temerin. In addition, paint was poured on the plinth of a statue depicting 19th century Hungarian politician Lajos Kossuth in Stara Moravica a few days ago, the words "Hungarians to Hungary" have been painted on a primary school building in Temerin and abuses against Hungarians and Croatians have been written on the chapel of a cemetery in Novi Sad.
Foreign affairs spokesman Lajos Szelestey said that at an upcoming meeting of the Hungarian-Serbian minority joint committee in early May, Hungary will once again call the Serbian side's attention to incidents in Vojvodina that hinder good relations between the two countries.
Vojvodina is home to Serbia's sizable ethnic Hungarian minority.
