Parties divided over referendum on MP spending rules

Hungary’s ruling Socialist Party will make every possible effort so that a referendum called on tightening parliamentary deputies’ reimbursement rules should not take place at all while the opposition Fidesz party would hold it immoral and unlawful to prevent the referendum by passing a law.

The Socialists are seeking for a solution so that the country should save the 4 billion forints (EUR 13.4 million) the referendum would cost, deputy Socialist group leader Istvan Gondor said.

In turn, Fidesz MP Istvan Balsai said that should not counter the will of 550,000 voters supporting the initiative. He noted that Parliament had already called the referendum on April 14.

The referendum was initiated by a private individual who collected over half a million signatures in support of her proposal that MPs should be obliged to present an invoice on every item for which they seek reimbursement.
