NATO chief meets Bajnai, praises Hungary’s performance

NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer praised Hungary’s performance in the organisation at a meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai in Brussels on Tuesday.

NATO spokesman James Appathurai said De Hoop Scheffer made special mention of the move of NATO’s strategic air transport capacities to Hungary’s Papa airbase and Hungary’s contribution to the mission in Afghanistan.

The prime minister confirmed at the meeting Hungary’s dedication to NATO and said that membership for Hungary meant not only the benefits of a collective defence but also the participation in a group of countries that share common values, Appathurai added.

Bajnai said Hungary fulfils its obligations within NATO despite the serious economic challenges it faces.

Bajnai and De Hoop Scheffer also discussed Russia and the Balkans, Appathurai said. Hungary plays a key role in shaping NATO’s policies towards the Balkans, he added quoting De Hoop Scheffer.

What is that, “key role,” exactly?
