Hungary’s liberal opposition Free Democrats are calling for two public debates to be held as part of the European parliamentary elections campaign, party leader Gabor Fodor told the press on Tuesday.
The first debate should be among party leaders on the domestic political, social and economic situation, Fodor said.
The second debate would be on views about Europe and European Parliament — this would be open to representatives of all parties which qualify to run in the elections, Fodor said.
The elections have an additional stake: the question of which will be the third political force in Hungary after main opposition Fidesz and the governing Socialists, Fodor said.
The Free Democrats, he said, aim to be the third largest force and regard the strengthening of national radicalism to be a great danger both from the point of view of Hungarian society and Hungary’s Europe policy.
Only parties with a parliamentary group will be invited, which excludes small conservative opposition Democratic Forum, he said.
The European elections will be held on June 7, and parties will compete for 22 seats in European Parliament.
