Hungary’s governing Socialist party will initiate an amendment to the Constitution so as to ban Holocaust denial and hate speech and make them punishable by law, party leader Ildiko Lendvai told a May Day celebration in Budapest on Friday.
“We need to do that because we want to live in peace and security, and learned from history that if they start with the Jews and the Gypsies, then they will continue with supporters of the Left and the common people,” she said.
The Constitution should be amended so that no one could be discriminated against by their political conviction, origin or religion, she said.
Organisations promoting extreme right views, including a 60-member splinter group of the Magyar Garda Movement, held a Holocaust-denial demonstration in the castle district of Budapest about two weeks ago.

what about freedom of speech…? It means everyone can express there opinion, even if you don’t agree…or we go back to pre-1989 times, the guys in power tell you what you can say or not! And that will be the end of free speech…!
Very appropriate, Géza. One ‘Big Brother’ gets kicked out and his ‘twin’ appears from the other side of the curtain!?
