The cabinet plans to tighten the penal code and mete out harsher punishments to repeat offenders in response to Fidesz’s “three strikes” proposal, Népszabadság reports.
The cabinet would raise jail terms by 50% for repeat offenders who commit crimes within three years. Fidesz would double the punishment for a third violent crime committed against individuals. The cabinet submitted its bill to Parliament last week.
Some 15,000 people are currently serving time in Hungarian jails.
