Socialists ramp up for Sunday mayoral election in key Pécs stronghold

Some 1,600 Socialist activists will travel to Pécs today to work for mayoral candidate Katalin Szili ahead of Sunday’s election, Magyar Hírlap writes.

Only women will take part in the campaign operation, and will be driven by bus from various parts of the country.

Fidesz candidate Zsolt Páva told Magyar Hírlap that he has never experienced such a dirty campaign as this, although he has been in local politics for 19 years.

Meanwhile the local election commission admonished Szili for the second time on a charge of fraud.

Local residents in Pécs say the Socialist Party is leaving no stone unturned to win the election, as after the recent local election defeat in Csepel the party’s confidence is at stake, according to reports.

A victory in Pécs, traditionally a Socialist stronghold, would give the party a boost ahead of the EU elections, observers note.
