Hungarian foreign minister sees chance reconciliation with Slovakia

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Balazs told MTI on Tuesday that he sees a historic chance for reconciliation between Hungary and Slovakia.

The minister is scheduled to meet his Slovak counterpart Miroslav Lajcak in Bratislava on Wednesday.

Balazs noted that over the past six months almost all Hungarian state leaders had established contact with their Slovak counterparts and that the two countries’ parliamentary committees had held joint sessions five times.

The two foreign ministers are scheduled to take stock of progress — the issues they are able to settle and those which should be decided on at a higher level.

“The issue of minorities is the hardest nut to crack,” Balazs said.

“I don’t think that the Slovak side will leave any of the problems unsaid,” the minister said, adding that he would also raise some disputed issues.

Balazs said that during his recent first meeting with Lajcak he had the impression that the Slovak foreign minister, too, was prepared for a sincere dialogue.
