Hungary elected to UN Human Rights Council

The General Assembly of the United Nations elected Hungary into its Human Rights Council, Hungary’s UN Ambassador Gabor Brodi said on Tuesday.

Hungary received 131 votes, while the other Eastern European state, Russia, which was also elected, received 146. The third candidate from the group, Azerbaijan, did not receive enough supporting votes.

With this election, Hungary will participate in the work of the 47-member body between 2009-2012.

The convincing majority of yes votes for Hungary showed the respect for its human rights policy, and its efforts in multilateral issues, Brodi said.

The Human Rights Council is an inter-governmental body within the UN, responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe.

The Council was created by the UN General Assembly in 2006, with the main purpose of addressing situations of human rights violations and make recommendations on them.
