Orbán tops popularity poll, Bajnai trails badly

Viktor Orban, the leader of conservative opposition Fidesz, was Hungary’s most popular politician in May, according to a Szonda Ipsos poll published in Tuesday’s Nepszabadsag.

Gordon Bajnai, the new prime minister heading the Socialist government, was among the least liked — in the same field as former government head Ferenc Gyurcsany and parliamentary group leader of the liberal Free Democrats Janos Koka.

The results can be phrased another way, however. All the politicians on the list had negative ratings, so the likes of President Laszlo Solyom and Parliamentary Speaker Katalin Szili — who just dramatically lost a bi-election in Pecs — rather than being among the most popular, are the least unpopular.
