Parliament celebrates International Missing Children’s Day with cut to child benefit

child-catcher.jpgThe Socialist/Liberal bloc that still manages to control Hungary’s Parliament has made good on their earlier decision to cut some child benefits. But how’s this for timing: they did it yesterday, which just happens to be “International Missing Children’s Day.” While of course the two things aren’t interconnected, it’s easy enough to make the case that they are: by squeezing state payouts to parents, Hungary’s social subsidy-addicted population will probably produce fewer children, meaning more “missing children” weighing on the country’s fragile demographic balance sheet. Either way, it’s yet another sign that the parties’ PR teams need some adult supervision.
