The Free Democrats will continue to support the crisis-management government of Gordon Bajnai and will act more firmly against discrimination and incitement to hatred in Hungary, the leader of the party told the Nepszabadsag daily in an interview on Friday.
“There is light at the end of the tunnel, since the Bajnai government has taken the most crucial measures to control the crisis,” said Gabor Fodor.
The first phase of managing the crisis had been concluded, he said. However, he urged the government to take further steps to address the social crisis by reforming health care and social services.
“If the government sticks consistently to its crisis-management policies the Free Democrats will be a stable and reliable supporter,” said Fodor.
On the planned property tax, he noted that his party would only support such a tax if it produced enough revenue to ease employment tax burdens.
Fodor said the liberal party was positioning itself to be Hungary’s third political force, and part of this endeavour involved speaking assertively against exclusion and hatred in society.
“The far right has appeared in Hungary, too, and the danger is that the country will end up like Joerg Haider’s Austria; except any exclusion by the family of nations would seriously harm the country,” said Fodor.
