Orbán says collapse of state cause of Magyar Gárda’s rise

The existence of the Magyar Gárda is due to the collapse of the state, while social bitterness is behind the growing support for the radical Jobbik party, Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán said in an interview with the conservative German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on Tuesday.

Orbán said ordinary people feel that the state no longer functions in certain areas, as it does not enforce law and order, there are no police in villages and in some regions the situation is similar to the American Wild West of 150 years ago. People have taken the law into their own hands and the creation of the Magyar Gárda is one of the consequences, he declared.

The existence of any paramilitary organisation will become unnecessary once Fidesz takes power, because there will be a sufficient number of police everywhere, Orbán said.

Orbán described the position of Roma as “muddy” saying this “fills us with concern”. Everyone must abide by the law, he remarked, and a difficult social position or ethnic origin cannot be an excuse. The present government is making this mistake and creating mistrust, he added. Orbán said it is essential that long-term prospects, jobs and training be offered to Roma.

So here Vikki is opening up for the ban of Magyar Garda I always claimed they will go for if Fidesz comes in to enough majority in Parliament.
The language “will become unnecessary” is a nice one…

The land of a thousand “ills” and corruption on a hitherto unknown scale. The wild west analogy cited by Vikki is correct but, it is the politicians and administrators that are the cowboys, and indians. We still want to know where all the money from the EU, IMF, and America has gone? Circa thirty billion euros. Whoever or whomever starts investigations into this puzzle could be credited with having some chance of being part of the next government. We want an answer! And Not rhetoric and bullshit on unrelated matters that do not concern Hungary or Hungarians. The usual suspects need not apply.

    greenshirt redux,
If you are an Orbanista, yes I would agree with you.
Even if the 2010 General Election is not won yet and Orban has a tendency to stumble, given the opportunity.
If you are not an Orbanista, then maybe you should not be so happy. A Fidesz with a strong majority in the 2010-14 Parliament will crack down on everything that can threat their hegemony, like Magyar Garda and the possibility in the Constitution to have Referendums like the last one.

@Helyes: Money from IMF and EU went into the budget, which mostly goes out in public sector wages and pensions. No big mystery there.

  6. Rudi says:

@Erik – the money went into the budget and went back out into the public sector? Well, some of it maybe… and some of it went straight into the pockets of friends and family of those controlling the money.

  7. Erik says:

@Rudi: Indeed it did. That’s why I said “mostly” :)

  8. Viking says:

    Rudi,
If the money “went straight into the pockets of friends and family of those controlling the money”, it should be rather easy to check because it would be a paper trail – correct?
I think those things are a bit more clever performed and not easily identified.
If you cannot see it – how did you know it happened?
