Opposition leader Viktor Orban’s recent statements have driven the Czech Republic, Germany and Slovakia into an anti-Hungarian coalition despite the fact that military cooperation between Hungary and Slovakia is exemplary, the deputy Defence Minister said on Thursday.
Agnes Vadai, of the governing Socialist party, commented on Fidesz leader Orban’s statement at a rally in late May according to which the upcoming EP elections would determine how many deputies can represent the Hungarians of the Carpathian Basin in Brussels. Orban’s remark provoked a Slovak government statement and a special session of the Slovak Parliament to discuss the matter.
“Deputy head of the European People’s Party Viktor Orban finds it especially hard to behave like a European. Eyebrows are raised after his various remarks in the Czech Republic, which fulfils the EU presidency, and in Germany, which is Hungary’s largest economic partner,” Vadai said.
Vadai declined to comment on a statement by the far-right leader in Slovakia concerning Hungarian-Slovak military issues. She said military relations between the two countries were excellent.
