Think tank says EP elections culmination of years-long crisis for left

The EP elections completed the years-long crisis of the social democratic parties in Europe in general, and in Hungary the left’s defeat may undermine the government’s stability, an analysis by think-tank Political Capital (PC) sent to MTI on Tuesday said.

The EP elections was not about governing parties losing to the opposition but social democratic parties losing to right wing parties. This was the case in Hungary, too, the political right has gained significant strength, the analysis said.

As for the election’s outcome PC said that although conservative Fidesz won big, its political strategy seeking to unify the right had failed, while the biggest winner became radical nationalist Jobbik, with three seats.

Explaining Jobbik’s gains PC said the party had successfully appealed strongly to young voters and those living in the backward northeast of the country, with a sizeable Roma population. It mostly built its campaign on anti-Roma sentiments, the analysis said.

Regarding possible developments PC pointed out that if new tax laws needing a two-thirds majority in parliament fail to pass, the government could collapse. Early elections, however, would be in the interest of Jobbik, whereas Fidesz might favour general elections next spring.

    Part of my family comes from the Nyírség, and I have never, in all my extensive travels around the world met a more noble, resolute, thoughtful and good natured community than those who come from that North Eastern part of Hungary.
    But because these people find themselves constantly and helplessly subject to the most rampant gypsy crime imaginable and see their small villages overrun; and then vote for the only party that recognizes what is going on and says it’s going to do anything about it: that makes them “backward”.
    Shame on you.

    Nyirseg -in all your global travels, which region of hungary would you consider to be the most backward, and least ¨noble¨? I´m just curious.

    @Oscar
    What you say is true about the quality of the Hungarian people living in that region is true, my experience with the Hungarians was very hospitable and far from backward, if people from the larger cities would behave in this civilized manner we would have a better society, thanks for your positive views..Magyarország a Magyarokje Szebb Jovot!
