Former Supreme Court chief denies plotting against successor

Former Supreme Court president Zoltán Lomnici denied a report on website Index that he had tried to persuade politicians to vote against chief justice András Baka.

In response to a remark made by President László Sólyom on Monday that “the Lomnici-era has definitively ended”, Lomnici replied that “one public dignitary should not criticise another public dignitary”.

Index claimed Lomnici had tried to present Baka as a right winger to the Socialist caucus in order to thwart his election. Lomnici also tried to persuade Fidesz members by claiming that the president and Baka had closed a deal with the Socialist Party under which, if he were elected, a Socialist-friendly Supreme Court vice president would be appointed, Index wrote, citing MPs speaking on condition of anonymity.
