Hungary’s Free Democrats will postpone a national congress to elect a new chairman and 12 new executives by one week, people close to the party told MTI on Wednesday.
The liberal party’s national council has decided to postpone the congress from July 4 to July 12, the sources said on condition of anonymity.
The Free Democrats’ leader Gabor Fodor offered to resign on June 7 after the party’s huge drubbing in the European Parliamentary election. Four party executives followed suit three days later.
At an extraordinary meeting this weekend, the national council is expected to amend the earlier decision on the date of electing new officials and to officially call the party meeting within 15 days.
The liberal party, which fields 19 deputies in the 386-seat Parliament, holds the balance of power. The minority ruling Socialist crisis-management government relies on the votes of liberal MPs in order to pass key legislation such as the 2010 budget.
Several liberal MPs have indicated their desire to see the current political cycle end after next year’s budget is passed at the end of the year. Other deputies have speculated that the party, which only managed to gain the support of 2.2 percent of the electorate in the EP elections, is likely to fold in its current set-up.
