Political leaders attend gala marking 1989 anniversary

The memory of the events of 1989, the courage of the Hungarian nation at that time should give “strength, faith and self-confidence” to today’s daily struggles for perfecting our achievements thus far, Prime Minister Gordon Bajnai said at a gala evening at the Budapest Opera House marking the 20th anniversary of dismantling the Iron Curtain.

The political regime transition is still incomplete and all politicians must be reminded that there efforts must be continued day-to-day, Bajnai said.

Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer said at the gala that the fall of the Iron Curtain had become a symbol of Europe’s re-unification. “Europe has never been this unified and so free… on this day people celebrate the end of a dark age and the beginning of a new epoch,” he said.
