Fidesz mayor of Debrecen tops political popularity survey; Orbán gains

Politicians of the main opposition Fidesz party gained in popularity and strengthened their lead over their Socialist rivals in June, pollster Szazadveg-Forsense told MTI on Tuesday.

The popularity list is topped by Lajos Kosa, deputy leader of Fidesz and mayor of Debrecen, with 63 points. President Laszlo Solyom was second with 58 points. Fidesz leader Viktor Orban, who was placed third with 56 points, achieved the biggest gain of eight points.

The average popularity rate of Fidesz politicians increased by two points to 51 as compared to March while that of the Socialists decreased by one to 37 points.

The bottom place on the list is still occupied by ex-premier Ferenc Gyurcsany (29 points). The popularity of his successor, Gordon Bajnai, deteriorated by two points, to 36.

House Speaker Katalin Szili continues to be the most popular Socialist politician with 48 points, even if she had to suffer a loss of five points over the past three months.

Both Ibolya David, leader of the small conservative opposition Democratic Forum, and Krisztina Morvai, MEP of the radical nationalist Jobbik party, scored 41 points.

The survey was conducted on a random sample of 1,000 adult respondents, from June 8 to 17.
