Official inquiry into controversial security firm halted

The Customs and Excise Guard has terminated its investigation into the private security company UD, declaring that no crime had been committed.

UD was the centre of a surveillance case unleashed by Democratic Forum leader Ibolya Dávid last September after she anonymously received a CD of conversations between UD leaders, OTP chairman Sándor Csányi and Fidesz-era cabinet chief István Stumpf. Dávid alleged that Fidesz was interested in using the company’s services to discredit her ahead of a Forum leadership election against MP Kornél Almássy.

UD was also suspected of gathering data on the National Security Office. Former secret services minister György Szilvásy called UD Fidesz’s “shadow secret service” and claimed that it had been attempting to hack into government computer systems and had deployed an espionage program on a server used by the Security Office.

The customs investigation was concerned with suspected violations of accounting rules and tax fraud.
