Szili steps up criticism of Socialists

Socialist leader Ildikó Lendvai will meet Speaker Katalin Szili in the next few days to discuss Szili’s role in the party’s preparations for the next parliamentary elections.

Szili, who will resign her post in September, told MTV talk show “Nap-kelte” Tuesday morning that her party did not reach out to society after June’s EU elections, and that Socialist MPs have not given the impression that they are ready to face up to the past and make changes.

She criticised the party for holding its convention behind closed doors on Saturday.

Society has turned away from the Socialists, Szili continued, because they took the wrong position in referendums, including the 2004 vote on dual citizenship, and last year’s plebiscite on medical and tuition fees.

Szili said in a statement to MTV that it is regrettable that nobody had contacted her since she announced her resignation to discuss what she might do for the party.

Lendvai told Népszabadság on Tuesday that the Socialists badly need Szili’s fresh energy and popularity.
