Three candidates emerge as Liberals prepare for leadership election

Four candidates for liberal opposition Free Democrat leader have qualified to run in the party election this weekend, but only three of them accepted the nomination, MTI learnt on Tuesday from liberal sources who asked to remain anonymous.

The three possible candidates are Szabolcs Badacsonyi, Attila Retkes and Leonard Weinek.

Gabor Fodor resigned as party leader after the liberals’ poor showing at European parliamentary elections on June 7. The liberals got 2.16 percent of the votes, well under the 5 percent limit to gain seats in the EP.

The Free Democrats currently hold the balance of power in parliament and the minority ruling Socialist party needs their support to pass key legislation such as next year’s budget.

The party will elect a new leader on Sunday.
