Majority in poll disapprove of Budapest’s direction, mayor

Some 55% of Budapest residents consider mayor Gábor Demszky unfit for his position or only partly competent, while 40% say he is the right man for the job, according to an opinion poll conducted by the Progresszív and Publicus institutes.

Of the respondents, 64-68% said they would not vote for Demszky were he to run for re-election in 2010. Demszky has said that the current term will be his last.

The city is going in the wrong direction, according to 74% of respondents. Demszky received an average mark of 2.5 points out of 5 for the past four years. Half of those surveyed said his work over the past 20 years has been to the benefit of the city.

The telephone survey of 800 residents was conducted July 2-4.
