Hungary’s main opposition Fidesz party said on Tuesday that the election of former Polish premier Jerzy Buzek as European Parliament president was an event of historic significance.
“This is the first occasion for a politician from a former communist country to be elected the leader of a European institution,” the party said in a statement.
The leaders of Fidesz are convinced that a president seeing Europe in true unity will be able to familiarise European citizens with the situation of the former communist countries, and enforce the interests and values of Central Europe in the European Union, the statement said.
Buzek won the vote with an outright majority of 77 percent at the inaugural session of the new 736-member EU assembly.
