Hungary’s local councils need to be fundamentally reformed rather than tinkered with, Lajos Bokros, MEP of the conservative Democratic Forum, told public television on Monday.
Bokros, a former finance minister, said that government measures to change the financing of municipalities were insufficient. The entire system of local government must be changed first and then decisions on financing made accordingly, he said. Small and inefficient local schools operated by local councils, for example, should be closed or integrated with larger ones, he said.
As for the economy as a whole, Bokros struck a positive note, saying that improvements were under way “partly due to the government’s efforts” but further steps were needed to boost investors’ confidence in the country.
The semi-technocratic government headed by Gordon Bajnai has cut public-sector pay and pensions and reduced income tax among other measures to boost the country’s flagging economy.
Bokros also said the central bank should cut its base rate if the forint appeared to be stable.
Bokros says local councils need sweeping reform.
He is certainly correct with this assertion.
My questions – WHEN? WHERE? AND HOW? will the reforms be implemented.
Modernisation across the board for Hungary – not just local government.
The problems are many because waiting in the wings is another useless government (Fidesz) to replace the current bunch of crooks and no-hopers (MSZP).
If the posters on this forum would only refrain from harping on about jews,WW1, WW1, Holocaust , Trianon, etc. etc. and address some of the urgent and pressing political issues then maybe the site would be worthy of its title: POLITICS:HU!!!
Jobbik seek the limelight with some extreme posturings on race and the reclamation of lost land under the Treaty of Trianon.
Diversification I’m afraid. Let’s try and persuade political parties to produce manifestos upon which we can gauge their worthiness to govern this lagging, sagging, country.
Terrafirma,
You are asking for something that cannot be produced without confronting the fundamental issues you so blidly dismissed. WW1, WW2, jews etc.
These factors are the root problem of Hungary’s pathetic performance and lagging behind to others to this very day.
Unless they are addressed on a national scale and seriousness, this country won’t succeed with the best of intentions and amount of financial assistance. This country is condemned to austerity by jews my terrafriend. If you are incapable of realizing that, write to the New York Times instead.
I can’t believe the ignorance some people afford themselves here.
On a related topic, is there any significance as to your chosen nick “terrafirma”?
Are you standing firmly on the ground by spouting drivel about issues you have no concept of and idea about, or is it a hereditary impediment? WW1, WW2 and the roles of jews are prominent, prevalent and essential for understanding.
Look it up online or go educate yourself in a library before making a loon out of yourself here.
beju,
Good answer!
Nothing can be done until Trianon and the outcome of WWI and WWII have all to be reverted.
The problem is that if you really want that, you should not go for Jobbik, but MIEP.
You and Sophie, who are so positive to Jobbik, but think that the biggest problem with WWII was that not all Jews were killed, misses the point that Jobbik is just there to support the Russian expansion in Europe.
I think you guys need to find a better substitute for A Hitler than Vona.

To comment on Terrafirma’s original post:
Bokros is saying the right stuff, but he is one of the few that is doing that. Fidesz has too big support in small councils so they will have an internal revolution if they would do any real changes.
Jobbik will fight to keep the small schools for 2 reasons:
a) Pure populism
b) Create local segregated schools, where Roma-children either do not get any schooling at all, or have to walk to the next villages (which will not accept them either).
Viking,
Thanks for your guidance with regards to MIEP, but I know it inside out.
In fact I was their candidate for the municipal elections in 2002 in my hometown.
I admire Csurka regardless of his corrupt dealings, so in cutting you short you haven’t invented the pyramids here. But thanks for your ill-directed comment.
Jobbik is the one to vote for, because only they have the chance to make a dent in and overturn the partocracy by now deeply embedded in Hungarian society.
Fidesz won’t do it, they’re too much part of the establishment. Real change will come with Jobbik.
Beju, you ran for election on the Miep ticket? That explains a lot. You supported a Party led by a self-admitted ex-III/III agent who bilked the MDF goverenment of millions of forints for a never finished 1990s TV show (directed by his son) in which hand puppets explain market systems to Hungarians. You then ran for politics so that you could have a fat cut of the political pie that you denounce everyone else for exploiting. And then you run to the USA because the money is good for you there.
Because, Beju, little feller, really, everybody knows Miep was the party of the ex-commies who needed a quick re-brand, and Jew baiting was the golden road to success. Ex-commie? Blame the Jews for communism, get off scott free as a clean Xtian Magyar.
So simple even people like yourself could believe it. And thousands in Hungary did buy their cheap crap political line. MIEP created a class of idiots like yourself and Jobbik who had no patience to learn democratic institutions and simply revert to a default mode of Kadarist nostalgia justfied by ranting about the Jews.
You are quite a primitive read… uh… “Bunchyboy?” (I enjoy reading your attempts to make up more vulgar English words than actially exit.) I imagine you to be a fat little balding man screaming into his keyboard in mid porn surf. You are far away and we laugh at your threats.
Aunty Entity,
Great you enjoyed my little input around here.
Primitive read you said by including your specific term “actialy exit” ?
May I direct you to some English language websites teaching you proper vocabulary and spelling first.
Then I may reply to your comment in blossoming detail.
Aunty,
You never heard the word hunchyback?
Do you live under a rock?
Feller on the other hand I don’t know where you came up with.
Feller.
Hmmmm….Australian mate?
You guys never knew proper English if that’s the case.
Like arse. That’s you.
Love
And finally Ms. Aunty,
Fat balding man in between porn sites…
This was the giveaway as to your claim who you are.
Jewish provocateurs with zits on their faces, sitting in a Budapest cubicle imagining accents and locations for credibility.
Next time think up something less transparent.
It will do you good. No kidding!
Be Jew – You ran on the platform of a corrupt political party which you admire, and then you scoot off when Hungarians reject your BS.
Man, you make the commies look like patriots!
ps I’m not jewish, so dont bother on that approach.
Kreston,
I ran on the platform of what?
I was not a candidate of MIEP for your info, they chose to support me. Big difference my friend.
Have you ever heard of being independent?
Hungarians you said reject my comments?
Are you one, or pretend to be one?
My guess is the later. Or the ladder you try to climb up on.
Just little math:
Bulgaria: 110,910 km² & 7,5 million people
Finland: 338 424 km² & 5 million people
Hungary: 93 030 km² & 10 million people
Portugal: 92 391 km² & 10 million people
Local/municipality/town/city governments:
Bulgaria: 260
Finland: 348
Hungary: 3500
Portugal: 308
While in other EU countries there is tendency to consolidate lower level administration into bigger units, in Hungary these local level administrative units are just out of control.
