Socialist leader warns Orbán to halt comments on economy

Socialist Party chairwoman Ildikó Lendvai on Sunday urged Fidesz chairman Viktor Orbán not to make economic statements “for at least a few weeks, because if he cannot or does not want to improve things, he should not do any wrong to ruin the country’s image”.

Making reference to the success of Hungarian foreign currency bond issued last week, Lendvai said the world market has given a vote of confidence to the cabinet’s crisis-management programme and this could have a beneficial effect on the assessment of credit rating agencies “unless irresponsible politicians destroy it with their statements”.

The country had to pay 2% more than Slovakia, and nearly 4% over the base rate. That’s not a ringing endorsement.
It would be interesting to know if Lendvai knows this? In truth, it proves the opposite; the market has already priced in a lack of confidence in HU.
Pretending that everything is just “peachy” and ignoring facts does the opposite. It errodes the trust that any policy makers are thinking about how to improve matters. Her statement suggests instead that she’d rather the likely heir to situation stay stum and endorse further “borrowing” that adds to the debt and its mounting service costs.

@Rolrox: Fully agree with you, but also wanted to point out that this relaying of Lendvai’s pronouncements missed the important point that this was underlining Standard and Poor’s remarks that careless talk from Fidesz could further undermine confidence in the currency. I had read this somewhere else originally, but found it mentioned in Nápszava, too: http://www.nepszava.hu/default.asp?cCenter=OnlineCikk.asp&ArticleID=1217914

“careless talk” is what they call the “truth” these days?

It seems to me that is Orban wants to critizie the program his is free to. If it works MSZ is going to take credit for it and really they dont get to call the shots on who says what.
Gotod – you wouldn’t know the truth if it fell on top of you.

have to go with godot on this one. unless one agrees with the idiots running the show during the past 3+ years, it is considered provocation or worse.

Lendvai is in “cuckoo” land trying to gag the opposition leader and asserting that the Hungarian economy is improving.
Lendvai would like to send a deputation to visit Orban and physically shut him up. Alas communism is dead except in the ever-decreasing ranks of the MSZP.
It (communism)still exists in the twisted and distorted mind of the traitorous zombie ..
