Head of the foreign affairs committee in Hungary’s parliament Zsolt Nemeth told news portal FigyeloNet on Wednesday that he saw a chance for Szekler Land, a region inhabited by many ethnic Hungarians in eastern Transylvania, to achieve autonomy.
Nemeth, of the main opposition Fidesz party, noted that Romanian president Traian Basescu addressed the traditional summer university and youth camp of Baile Tusnad, C Romania, last weekend, being the first Romanian head of state in office to attend the event. Basescu made several concrete proposals, he added.
“He said he was thinking along the lines of decentralisation, granting certain authorities to regions. The transformation of the regions is underway and I trust that a Szekler Land region may be set up, which can become an administrative region,” Nemeth said.
Nemeth said Basescu “plans to cooperate with Fidesz, the same way Fidesz plans to cooperate with Traian Basescu. “After all, we cannot pursue a nation policy without cooperating with neighbouring countries,” he added.

All very well this debate on ethnic Hungarians
living in foreign territories.
The problem is that the windbags like Orban Viktor,
Nemeth, et al have absolutely no idea whatsoever what they are letting themselves in/us for.
Hungary is a great country but unfortunately
economically challenged at the moment. Many people are out of work and at least one and a half million gypsies have settled here whose children do not attend school and therefore have no chance of getting employed.
More than one million young Hungarians seek and find work abroad. Three million Hungarians are of pensionable age.
Hungary has a myriad of internal problems to solve. But, true to form, politicians seek to ignore the “crisis”, and look to dig up old issues
that cannot and will not be resolved without blood being shed. Take this literally, or figuratively – the outcome will be the same.
